When Come Back, Bring Pie…

I must admit that I have become obsessed with Weebl and Bob since my sweetie first posted a link to these lovable pie-a-holics. So much so, that I have joined forces with Sarah and Dr. Praxis Loki to find—and devour—the best pie in the Washington metropolitan area.

To that end the three of us made our way to our first site visit, The Diner in Adams Morgan. I first became aware of this trendy little place last fall when it was the late-night-munchies spot of choice for post-Atomic outings. Its popularity with the group waned but mostly due to the long hike from Cleveland Park and not due to the establishment itself, which has something for everyone.

But we came for one thing, and one thing only… pie. So after making the long walk, we settled into a table directly beneath a giant projection screen showing the Tour de France, and waited to indulge ourselves with pie goodness.

Per our business model, each of us picked a different type of pie to sample. Sarah had the Apple (a la mode); the good doctor had the Coconut Custard, and I took a stab at the Sour Cherry.

The cherry pie wasn’t stellar, and definitely not home made—at least that is what the gruff waiter said when we inquired into how they got their pies. However, for the price the pie was good and edible. The crust was on the buttery side, and not as flaky as I tend to prefer, but it was still tasty and did not have the consistency of cardboard as some boxed pies tend to have. The filling was loaded with lots of cherries and wasn’t simply a few pieces of fruit swimming in a goo of cherry-flavored sauce. Despite its name the “sour” cherry pie was not too tart and, in fact, had a nice balance of sweet and tangy flavors. While in hindsight I might have asked Mr. Giggles to heat the pie, overall it was a good pie experience, and the excellent milk shake complimented the pie quite well.

Pie Score (Out of 10): 6

Conclusion: While the service left a lot to be desired (I never did get the cup of coffee I ordered), the pie wasn’t half bad. Pie at The Diner goes for just under $3, and adding some ice cream is an extra buck. The milk shake was delicious, but a bit on the steep side at $4.50. If you are in Adams Morgan and have a hankering for pie then by all means stop in and have a slice, but don’t go out of your way.

$4.50 for a milkshake? What’s in it? Vodka, Gin, Kahlua? Sheesh, that must be some milkshake! (reference to Pulp Fiction there, in case ya missed it).
