Which Puppy Will Pick Us? …
On Saturday, we attended our first dog show. This was a specialty show, hosted by the Boston Terrier Club of Maryland, so it was an all-Boston affair. In addition to seeing many fine representatives of the breed compete, we also had the chance to meet our breeder in person. We’d asked if we could get some pictures of her available puppies, since it will be another few weeks before we get to have our in-person visit.
Fortunately, the breeder came through! In a couple weeks, we’ll see which one picks us!
Focus, FOCUS! Seriously though, they both look very cute. Can’t wait to meet little Molly (can I say that here?).

Yeah, “Molly” is a front-runner in the name game right now. We have a short list of names, but will wait until we “meet” the puppies in person before making a decision.
Where did “Molly” come from?
Like Sarah said, we haven’t made the final decision yet, and probably won’t until we meet the dog in a few weeks.
I’d like to say there is some clever reason we came up with the name Molly, but honestly, we just like the name.
However, after we came up with the name, I decided that it was cool because the dog would share the name of a favourite political columnist, Molly Ivins.
…and, in all honesty, we prefer 2-syllable British-sounding names.
Gotta like 2-syllable names. Don’t know which one Molly is, but I’m sure she’s the cuter one.

Molly isn’t that unusual a name for a dog… a friend of ours in Calgary has a dog named Molly.
We named our dog Cayce after two of William Gibson’s characters: It’s spelled Cayce, like the protagonist of Pattern Recognition, but pronounced “Case”, like the protagonist from Neuromancer.
My partner Kirsten has a habit of naming animals and objects after literary figures; our first cat is named Zelda, after F. Scott Fitzgerald’s crazy wife, and our second cat is named Heidegger, after the German existentialist philosopher.
Funnily enough, we almost got a second dog, who was already named Dixie (a secondary character in Neuromancer was named Dixie Flatline)
OT a bit but Cayce from Patern Recognition was also pronounced “case”. (^_^)

It is irresponsible buying a pet from a breeder when there are dogs being killed by humane societies because they don’t have anybody to adopt them. Purebread dogs are just overbread status symbols. Imagine the awesome home you chould have given some poor dog confined to a tiny cage at the humane society waiting to be put to sleep.
oh good grief. as long as you give an animal a safe and loving home and make sure that animal isn’t out spawning unwanted babies, you are a good pet-parent. that’s like saying you’re a bad person if you decide to have your own children instead of adopting a starving baby from colombia or something.
plus (I say this as the owner of a shelter dog that I love to death), rescued dogs are not the best option for everyone, and many of those dogs would be better off if people & their societies would stop pretending otherwise.
